Summer at the Movies: Instant Family Wisdom?

Continuing a Summer Sermon Series at the Movies with a clip from the 2018 film “Instant Family,” Pastor Cara Scriven invites us to consider how wisdom is often gained through learning how best to apply the rules while navigating the challenges life presents. The scripture for the day (Proverbs 8:22-36) also offers an opportunity to consider the interplay between Wisdom and Law.

Baptized into Christ Jesus

In today’s message, Pastor Cara Scriven draws a connection between our Scripture text (Romans 6:1-14) and the mystic Saint Teresa of Avila and her intimate understanding of our union with Christ and all of creation. Pastor Cara remarks that Christians in the West often have difficulty understanding the the oneness with Christ that the Apostle Paul intended when he said we were “baptized into Christ Jesus.”

Are you ashamed?

In this week's sermon, Pastor Cara Scriven digs into a key part of Paul's understanding of his ministry, as found in our scripture today (Romans 1:1-17). A Case of Mistaken Identity

This week's scripture (Acts 13:13, 14:8-18) depicts a case of mistaken identity where the Apostle Paul and companion Barnabas are mistaken for Roman Gods as they healed a man in Lystra.

Draw the Circle Wider

"When we believe we need to defend God, we can do some serious harm," preaches Pastor Cara Scriven in a sermon on Acts 10:1-17, 34-48 where the Apostle Peter struggles to accept a vision from God in conflict with his understanding of the 'rules.'

Reflecting on several examples, including the harmful position of The United Methodist Church on LGBTQI+ inclusion, she asserts that "what we believe, and the lengths we go to defend them, have real consequences."

Palm Sunday

In her message for Palm Sunday, Pastor Cara Scriven takes us deep into the Gospel of Matthew’s depiction of Jesus as he enters into Jerusalem on what Christians would come to call Palm Sunday (Matt. 21:1-17).

Grounding Matthew’s narrative in the story of the Passover and other prophetic expectations of Jesus, she challenges us to consider who Jesus truly is to us?
